1. Major/year:
Nutrition, Dietetic Intern, Master's Program. I have been taking classes at Kent since 2004 part time. I got into the master's program 1 1/2 years ago and hope to graduate in Dec. 2009.
2. Current job:
I am a spokesperson for the Ohio Lottery Evening Drawings - Pick 3, Pick 4, Rolling Cash 5, Classic Lotto - seen on Channel 5 Cleveland and also statewide at 7:29 p.m. on weeknights and 7:50 p.m. on Saturdays. I am one of four spokespersons, so I am on TV 2-3 times a week. I only work a minute. It's not a bad job for a student. Also, I am a graduate assistant for the nutrition department.
3. Hometown:
I grew up in Solon, Ohio, but I currently live in Northfield Center Township.
4. Future plans:
I plan on working as a registered dietician in diabetes education, weight loss, or media
5. What have you learned about yourself since being at KSU?
I have learned that being successful in life is not accomplished alone. A lot of people have helped me along the way, including my adviser Dr. Karen Gordon. I received a scholarship from the nutrition department and also a graduate assistantship. I also received a lot of help in the learning process from the Kent professors.
6.
What made you choose this university/major?
When I decided I wanted to pursue a degree in nutrition I visited a few universities. When I met with Dr. Natalie Caine-Bish from the Kent nutrition department, she was the only person I met with that showed me how I could achieve my goal. My undergraduate degree from Kent was in telecommunications. I had to make up a lot of science classes. She made me believe it was something I could achieve by mapping out how I could do it.
7. What is an interesting fact about you?
I teach step aerobics, yoga, and weight lifting. I have done this for more than five years. I used to live in California and since moving back to Ohio I knew I needed something to motivate me to exercise during the cold winter months. I decided to become a fitness instructor. I figured if I was getting paid to work out, I would have to show up.
8. What advice would you give other prospective graduate students?
Put one foot in front of the other. Have a dream. Ignore others who don't support your dream. Life is too short not to pursue something you love.
9. Most interesting class and/or faculty member in your program?
I have to thank Dr. Angie Ha from the Kent nutrition department. She helped me obtain a scholarship and a graduate assistantship to help pay for my education. I also enjoyed Dr. Barbara Scheule's and Greta Silers' food study class and food lab. I did not know how to cook prior to taking a class. They both made the learning process fun.
